In 2014, the government announced it would increase the Normal Minimum Pension Age (NMPA) to age 57 from 6 April 2028, to coincide with the rise of State Pension age to 67. The NMPA is the earliest point a member can take their pension.
This will not affect members retiring early due to ill-health.
For those with scheme membership which began before 4 November 2021, protections to retain the right to retire from age 55 may be introduced.
We will update this webpage with further information when the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government have confirmed whether protections will be introduced.
The benefit projectors on My Pension Online will also be updated when further information becomes available.
Update - October 2025
A new consultation has been opened by MHCLG: LGPS: Scheme improvements (access and protections) consultation.
The consultation outlines proposed changes to the LGPS regulations in England and Wales. It covers several areas, including the potential protections for the future change to NMPA.
If you wish to respond to the consultation, MHCLG’s preferred method is by their online survey.
The consultation is open until 22 December 2025.
