Your age will determine what happens to your Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) benefits if your employment finishes due to:
- voluntary redundancy
- compulsory redundancy
- business efficiency
If you're 55 or over
Your benefits are usually payable unreduced if your employer approves for you to leave employment on either redundancy or business efficiency grounds and you have at least 2 years LGPS membership. We’ll write to you with your payment options once your employer notifies us, as your pension is payable immediately from your leaving date.
If you're under 55
You’ll become a deferred member of the scheme if you're under 55 when you’re made redundant or leave employment on business efficiency grounds. As a deferred member, you’ll hold a pension benefit with the LGPS until:
- you choose to take it at any point between age 55 to 75
- it becomes payable due to ill health subject to criteria
- you transfer out of the scheme
If you have less than 2 years membership
You’ll be eligible for one of the following options if you leave employment on either redundancy or business efficiency and have less than 2 years membership in the LGPS:
