Elected members were previously able to join the LGPS prior to 1 April 2014, when this option was removed following changes to the scheme.

Elected members who were members of the scheme on 31 March 2014 were able to remain in the LGPS until the end of their term of office, or earlier if they reached age 75, or decided to opt out of the scheme.

These members were unable to re-join the LGPS in subsequent terms of office.  

After their period of active membership, elected members’ pensions became deferred until choosing to claim their pension. Elected members will have received full details of the amount of pension benefit built up after their period of scheme membership ended.
